À l’été 1918, il est un des as de l’aviation les plus réputés chez les Alliés, avec 72 victoires à son palmarès. William est d’abord incorporé dans la cavalerie en août 1914, il rejoint par la suite le Royal Flying Corps, en 1915, où il se révèle bon pilote et excellent tireur. En soutien des Canadiens à Vimy, pendant la Bataille d’Arras, il vole trop bas et, touché par un obus, il perd un morceau d’aile. Pour avoir abattu 12 avions pendant le seul mois d’avril 1917, sans compter une confrontation avec le Baron Rouge allemand dans le ciel de l’Artois, le roi Georges V lui remet la Victoria Cross. Le haut-commandement britannique le rapatrie en Angleterre, en juin 1918, pour former de nouveaux pilotes.

In the summer of 1918, William was one of the most renowned Allied flying aces, with 72 victories to his name. He first joined the cavalry in August 1914 and later joined the Royal Flying Corps in 1915, where he demonstrated himself to be a good pilot and an excellent shot. When supporting the Canadians at Vimy during the Battle of Arras, he flew too low and lost parts of a wing from a shell hit. In recognition of his having downed 12 aircrafts in the month of April 1917 alone, in addition to a confrontation with the German Red Baron in the skies over Artois, King George V presented him with the Victoria Cross. The British High Command repatriated him to England in June 1918 in order to train new pilots.
