Comme tant d’autres à cette époque, Harry n’a quitté sa région natale que pour combattre dans l’enfer des tranchées du front occidental. En 1916, après plusieurs semaines de lutte en France avec son bataillon du 2nd Lincolnshire, il obtient une permission pendant laquelle il retourne en Angleterre et se marie avec Elsie, sa fiancée. À son retour, Harry apprend que la plupart des soldats de son unité ont été tués ou faits prisonniers. Il est alors affecté au 10th Lincolnshire en tant que brancardier pour pourvoir au manque d’hommes à ce poste. Durant la Bataille d’Arras, sa seule division, la 34th, perd 5 487 soldats pendant le seul mois d’avril. Harry survit à cette bataille et à la guerre. Il s’éteint à l’âge de 99 ans en Angleterre.
Like so many others of his generation, Harry left his region of birth only to go through the hell of fighting in the trenches on the Western Front. In 1916, after several weeks of combat in France with his battalion of the 2nd Lincolnshire, he was given leave to return to England and marry his fiancée, Elsie. Upon his return, Harry learned that most of the men in his unit had been killed or taken captive. He was then transferred to the 10th Lincolnshire as a stretcher bearer to help fill the shortage of men in this post. During the Battle of Arras his division, the 34th, lost 5,487 men in the month of April alone. Harry survived this battle and the War. He passed away at the age of 99 in England.

Harry est tailleur jusqu’à la Grande Dépression des années 30. Il travaille ensuite au sein du conseil municipal de la ville de Shepshed. Harry est marié à Elsie Green pendant plus de 50 ans. De leur union sont nés trois fils, Frederick, Harry et Donald.
La belle-famille d’Harry n’a pas été épargnée par l’horreur de la Première Guerre mondiale puisque son épouse Elsie a perdu son unique frère Albert qui avait menti sur son âge pour partir au combat. Il meurt abattu par un tireur d’élite turc en Palestine le 19 septembre 1918.

Harry was a tailor until the Great Depression of the 1930s. He then worked for the municipal council in the town of Shepshed. Harry was married to Elsie Green for more than 50 years. They had three sons, Frederick, Harry and Donald.
Harry's in-laws were not spared the horror of the First World War. His wife, Elsie, lost her only brother, Albert, who had lied about his age in order to go to war. He died in Palestine on 19th September 1918, shot by a Turkish sniper.
