Agriculteur en Angleterre, George s’engage en tant que volontaire le 10 décembre 1915. Tout au long de la guerre, il échange une correspondance avec sa famille. Dans ses lettres, il évoque par exemple son étonnement de ne voir que peu de civils mais espère rencontrer de jeunes Françaises. Pendant la Bataille d’Arras, les hommes de son unité sont employés à la construction de voies ferrées nécessaires au transport du ravitaillement. Six à sept personnes travaillent à l’arrière pour soutenir l’action d’un combattant en première ligne. Ce chiffre démontre le rôle vital de l’intendance en temps de guerre. George est tué quelques jours après la fin de la bataille. Il est enterré dans le cimetière militaire britannique de Vaux-Vraucourt.
A farmer in England, George joined up as a volunteer on 10th December 1915. He corresponded with his family throughout the War. In the letters, for example, he mentioned his astonishment at seeing so few civilians but he also told he hoped to meet some French girls. During the Battle of Arras, the men of his unit were deployed on the construction of the rail lines needed to transport supplies. There were six or seven people working at the rear of the front to support the action of a single front line combatant. This figure demonstrates the vital role played by supply operations in times of war. George was killed a few days after the end of the battle. He is buried in the British Military Cemetery at Vaulx-Vraucourt.
