Harold, chef d’entreprise à Norwich, s’engage dans l’armée britannique dès le 1er septembre 1914, un mois à peine après la déclaration de guerre. Après avoir suivi un entraînement militaire, il instruit à son tour les recrues en partance pour le front jusqu’à son arrivée à Arras en septembre 1916. Le 21 avril 1917, pendant la Bataille d’Arras, Harold part en reconnaissance, traverse le no man’s land soumis au gigantesque tir de barrage ennemi et revient avec de précieuses informations. Pour cet acte de bravoure Harold reçoit la Military Cross et est promu au grade de Major.

The head of a company in Norwich, Harold joined up with the British Army as early as 1st September 1914, barely a month after the declaration of war. After undergoing military training, he himself instructed troops due to leave for the front until he was posted to Arras in September 1916. On 21st April 1917, during the Battle of Arras, Harold went on a reconnaissance mission, crossed no man's land under a massive enemy barrage and returned with vital information. Harold was awarded the Military Cross for this act of bravery and was promoted to the rank of major.
