À l’entrée en guerre du Royaume-Uni, la force territoriale, une armée de réserve formée de volontaires, est mobilisée. Sa mission première est d’assurer la défense du territoire britannique. Frederick, attaché au Yeomanry, une milice à cheval de la force territoriale, est envoyé en 1916 en Irlande pour patrouiller et mater la révolte de Dublin. La même année, il est reversé, à son grand regret, dans un bataillon d’infanterie des Royal Fusiliers. Le 9 avril 1917 à 7h50, son unité se lance à l’assaut de Observation Ridge, une crête tenue par les Allemands entre Arras et Feuchy. Frederick est tué au cours de l’attaque et est inhumé dans le Gourock Trench British Cemetery à Tilloy-les-Mofflaines.

The Territorial Force, a volunteer reserve army, was mobilised when the United Kingdom entered the War. Its primary mission was to defend British territory. Attached to the Yeomanry, a mounted militia forming part of the Territorial Force, Frederick was sent to Ireland in 1916 to patrol and to suppress the Dublin Revolt. The same year, to his great regret he was transferred to an infantry battalion of the Royal Fusiliers. On 9th April 1917 at 07:00 hours, his unit launched an attack on Observation Ridge, a ridge held by the Germans between Arras and Feuchy. Frederick was killed during the attack and was buried in Gourock Trench British Cemetery at Tilloy-les-Mofflaines.
