Thomas est mineur dans les mines de charbon du Northumberland lorsqu'il rejoint l'armée britannique. Le premier jour de la Bataille d'Arras, son bataillon d’infanterie est engagé entre le village de Roclincourt et Bailleul-Sire-Berthoult. Au soir du 9 avril, tous les objectifs fixés sont atteints et de nombreux soldats allemands sont faits prisonniers,  mais les pertes restent lourdes pour le bataillon décimé par des tirs de mitrailleuses allemandes très meurtriers. Thomas est l’un de ses soldats britanniques tués au cours de cette action et repose au Roclincourt Valley Cemetery. Sur cette photographie, Thomas pose à gauche de son frère Francis, soldat au sein de la Royal Field Artillery. Francis, quant à lui, survit à la guerre.

Thomas was a miner in the Northumberland coal mines when he joined the British Army. On the first day of the Battle of Arras, his infantry battalion was deployed between the villages of Roclincourt and Bailleul-Sire-Berthoult. By the evening of 9th April, all the set objectives had been achieved and numerous German soldiers had been taken prisoner, but the battalion had still suffered heavy losses, decimated by very lethal German machine gun fire. Thomas was among those British soldiers killed in the course of that action, and he is laid to rest in the Roclincourt Valley Cemetery. In this photograph, Thomas appears to the left of his brother Francis, a soldier in the Royal Field Artillery. Francis, as for him, survived the war.
