Le 5 juillet 1915, un bombardement embrase l’abbaye Saint-Vaast et la cathédrale. Une grande partie des collections des archives départementales, de la bibliothèque et du musée abritée dans ces bâtiments est détruite. Devant ce désastre, l’administration des Beaux-Arts prend conscience de la nécessité de sauvegarder ce patrimoine et crée un service de protection et d'évacuation des œuvres d'art et des monuments dépendant de l’armée. Fernand, peintre et prix de Rome, devient en mai 1917 chef de ce service pour le front Nord et mène une action exemplaire en zone britannique. À Arras, il organise des dépôts d’objets d’art place Victor-Hugo et dans les caves de l’abbaye. Il inventorie, sécurise puis transfère vers l’arrière les œuvres provenant de la zone de guerre. Il recevra la Croix de guerre et la Légion d'honneur.
On 5th July 1915, a bombardment set Saint-Vaast Abbey and the cathedral ablaze. A large part of the collections of the departmental archives, the library and the museum, all located within these buildings, was destroyed. In response to this disaster, the Fine Arts administration became aware of the need to safeguard this heritage and created a department tasked with protecting and evacuating works of art and monuments, under the auspices of the army. In May 1917, painter and Prix de Rome winner, Fernand, was appointed head of this department with responsibility for the Nord front and conducted exemplary actions in the British zone. In Arras, he organised storage depots for works of art in the Place Victor-Hugo and in the Abbey cellars. He inventorised, made safe and then transferred works from the battle zone to locations rear of the front. He went on to receive the Croix de Guerre and membership of the Légion d'honneur.
