À la fin des moissons, ce fermier âgé de 20 ans devient engagé volontaire dans le 27th Battalion (City of Winnipeg) en novembre 1915 et, après quelques mois d’entraînement, arrive en France en août 1916. Remis d’une blessure au genou, Arthur participe au sein de la 2nde Division canadienne à l’assaut de la crête de Vimy, le 9 avril 1917 puis, en septembre 1918, aux combats près de Cambrai où il est décoré de la croix de guerre. Après être resté dans les troupes d’occupation en Allemagne, il retourne en 1919 au Canada où il se marie et devient père de quatre enfants.

With the harvest complete, this 20-year-old farmer joined up as a volunteer with the 27th Battalion (City of Winnipeg) in November 1915. After a few months of training, he arrived in France in August 1916. Having recovered from a wound to the knee, Arthur took part with the 2nd Canadian Division in the assault on Vimy Ridge on 9th April 1917 and later, in September 1918, in the battles near Cambrai for which he was decorated with the Croix de guerre. After remaining for a period with the occupation troops in Germany, he returned to Canada in 1919 where he married and had four children.
