Ronald s’engage en tant que volontaire dans l’armée britannique et, en avril 1915, débarque en France. Fin mars 1917, son bataillon et lui sont cantonnés dans les caves de l’abbaye Saint-Vaast à Arras. Ils sont régulièrement appelés en renfort pour aider les tunneliers à achever l’aménagement des  carrières souterraines afin d’abriter les troupes avant la Bataille d’Arras. Le 9 avril, son bataillon s’élance à l’assaut des lignes ennemies au nord de la route Arras-Cambrai et combat pendant toute la durée de la Bataille d’Arras. En novembre 1917, Ronald est porté disparu lors de la Bataille de Cambrai. Son nom est gravé sur le Mémorial de Louverval.

 

Ronald volunteered for the British Army and was sent to France in April 1915. At the end of March 1917, he and his battalion were quartered in the cellars of Saint-Vaast Abbey in Arras. They were regularly called up as reinforcement to help the tunnellers complete development work in the underground quarries, which were intended to house the troops before the Battle of Arras. On 9th April, his battalion attacked enemy lines to the north of the Arras-Cambrai road and fought for the entire duration of the Battle of Arras. In November 1917, Ronald was recorded as missing in action during the Battle of Cambrai. His name is engraved on the Memorial to the Missing at Louverval.
