Poète et écrivain, Siegfried, s'engage en août 1914. Si sa poésie de guerre évolue rapidement pour exprimer son aversion contre la guerre en décrivant l’horreur des tranchées, il montre un courage exceptionnel au combat. Le 16 avril 1917, pendant la Bataille d'Arras, il est blessé près de Fontaine-les-Croisilles. Rétabli, il refuse de reprendre son service et envoie à son commandant une lettre intitulée « Déclaration d'un soldat », véritable manifeste contre les autorités militaires. Il est alors envoyé pour neurasthénie à l'hôpital de Craiglockhart en Écosse. De retour au front depuis le 1er mai 1918, Siegfried est à nouveau blessé en juillet et apprend l’armistice au Lennel House Convalescent Home en Angleterre.

A poet and writer, Siegfried joined up in August 1914. Although his war poetry quickly evolved to express his repugnance for war, describing the horror of the trenches, he displayed exceptional bravery in battle. On 16th April 1917, during the Battle of Arras, he was wounded near Fontaine-les-Croisilles. After his recovery, he refused to return to duty and sent his commander a letter entitled "Finished with the War : A Soldier's Declaration", a real manifesto against the military authorities. He was then sent to Craiglockhart War Hospital in Scotland, with shell shock. After returning to the front on 1st May 1918, Siegfried was again wounded in July and learned of the Armistice as a patient at Lennel House Convalescent Home in England.
