Greffier de profession et marié le 28 février 1916, Robert s’engage la même année dans le 18th Battalion Manchester Regiment, avec le grade de Corporal. Au 1er janvier 1917, il est stationné à Bailleulval, au sud-ouest d’Arras. Le premier jour de la Bataille d’Arras, alors que son bataillon reçoit l’ordre d’occuper les positions ennemies au sud de Mercatel, Robert s’illustre en infligeant de lourdes pertes aux Allemands avec sa mitrailleuse Lewis. Pour cette action, Robert s’est vu attribué la Military Medal.

Robert was clerk by profession and married on 28th February 1916. In that same year he joined up with the 18th Battalion, Manchester Regiment, at the rank of Corporal. On 1st January 1917, he was stationed at Bailleulval, to the south-west of Arras. On the first day of the Battle of Arras, when his battalion received the order to occupy the enemy positions to the south of Mercatel, Robert distinguished himself by inflicting heavy losses on the Germans with his Lewis gun. For this action, Robert was awarded the Military Medal.
