Début 1917, des bataillons de pionniers sont affectés à Arras afin d’aider les tunneliers néo-zélandais à aménager les carrières pour stationner les Britanniques à la veille de la Bataille d'Arras. Celui de Richard prend en charge les carrières du secteur Saint-Sauveur situées sous la route de Cambrai. Selon lui, celles du secteur Ronville aménagées par les Néo-Zélandais sous la route de Bapaume sont bien plus vastes et confortables. Après le 9 avril, Richard et ses compagnons d'arme suivent l’avancée de troupes pour consolider les tranchées capturées. Il est tué deux mois après la fin de la bataille et repose depuis au Monchy British Cemetery.
In early 1917, pioneer battalions were deployed to Arras to support the New Zealand tunnellers in developing the quarries where British troops were to be stationed ahead of the Battle of Arras. Richard's battalion were responsible for the quarries in the Saint-Sauveur sector, located under the Cambrai road. According to him, those in the Ronville sector developed by the New Zealanders under the Bapaume road were much bigger and more comfortable. After 9th April, Richard and his brothers-in-arms followed the advancing troops in order to consolidate the captured trenches. He was killed two months after the end of the battle and has since lain in Monchy British Cemetery.
