Arrivé en France en août 1916, William est directement plongé au cœur de la Bataille de la Somme. Début 1917, il est envoyé à Arras, « une jolie ville mais très endommagée » d’après son journal de guerre. Dans la nuit du 6 avril, son unité de mitrailleurs est cantonnée dans une des carrières aménagées sous la ville. Le 9, peu après minuit, commence l’enfer de la bataille pour ces hommes. Lors du bombardement britannique précédant l’assaut, ils épuisent leurs 48 000 cartouches en tir courbe afin de neutraliser les défenses des positions allemandes. Blessé aux mains le 27 avril à Monchy-le-Preux, William est définitivement renvoyé par bateau en Angleterre après 9 mois de présence en France.

Arriving in France in August 1916, William was plunged straight into the fray in the Battle of the Somme. In early 1917, he was sent to Arras, “very nice town, but badly knocked about” according to his war diary. On the night of 6th April, his unit of gunners was quartered in one of the quarries laid out beneath the town. On the 9th, shortly after midnight, the hell of battle started for these men. During the British bombardment preceding the assault, they used up their 48,000 rounds in the indirect fire in order to neutralise the defences of the German positions. Wounded in the hands on 27th April at Monchy-le-Preux, William was permanently returned to England by boat, after 9 months of action in France.
