Après les succès engrangés lors des premiers jours de la Bataille d’Arras, le commandement décide de relancer l’offensive les 23 et 24 avril 1917. Au cours de cette phase, connue sous le nom de « seconde bataille de la Scarpe », les hommes du 8th Seaforth Highlanders prennent le village de Guémappe. Le bilan de la journée est lourd. Le bataillon compte 98 morts qui seront enterrés au Guemappe British Cemetery. Parmi eux figure James. Sur cette photo, on le voit à la gauche de son ami Peter Hill, tué l’année précédente au cours de la Bataille de la Somme.

After the successes achieved in the first days of the Battle of Arras, the high command decided to resume the offensive on 23rd and 24th April 1917. During this phase, known as the Second Battle of the Scarpe, the men of the 8th Seaforth Highlanders captured the village of Guémappe. The day's toll was a heavy one. The battalion suffered 98 dead soldiers who are buried in Guémappe British Cemetery. James was one of them. In this photograph, we can see him to the left of his friend Peter Hill, killed the previous year during the Battle of the Somme.
